The International Day of Older Persons, a glorious holiday honoring our dear elders and grandmothers, who are the true value of our society, the blessing of our homes, and the spiritual bridge connecting generations, is widely celebrated in our country. This holiday is not merely a milestone date on the calendar, but a vivid symbol of our centuries-old national traditions, high esteem, courtesy, and respect for the older generation.

In 1990, the United Nations (UN) declared October 1st as the International Day of Older Persons to strengthen the role of the elderly in society, protect their rights, and ensure modern living conditions. Since then, this day has been celebrated with joyful events, meetings, and celebrations all around the world and within our Independent, Neutral Homeland.

Since ancient times, the Turkmen people have followed the wisdom of their white-bearded elders and guided their paths with their valuable advice. Our elders are always at the head of our celebrations and harmonious councils, while our dear mothers embody the warmth of the sacred hearth.

Our elders and senior citizens are the strongest bridge between our past and our future. Their upbringing and guidance serve as a great school for the younger generation to grow up loyal to the Motherland, hardworking, highly moral, and well-educated. The life experience of people who have reached old age is an invaluable guide for the youth.

Improving the living conditions of the older generation, protecting their health, and upholding their dignity is one of the priority areas of state policy in our country. They are granted great respect at the state level, and their patriotic and social activities are regularly celebrated.

October 1st is a day that fills our hearts with warmth, loyalty, and gratitude. Today, we bow once again before our dear grandfathers and grandmothers, wishing them health and long lives. May the wise words of our white-bearded elders and silver-haired mothers continue to be the grace of our homes and the guiding light for our generations!

Happy holiday, our dear and respected elders!

THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES

– Humanity

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, born of a desire to bring assistance
without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield, endeavours, in its international and
national capacity, to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. Its purpose
is to protect life and health and to ensure respect for the human being. It promotes mutual
understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace amongst all peoples.

– Impartiality

It makes no discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions. It
endeavors to relieve the suffering of individuals, being guided solely by their needs, and to give
priority to the most urgent cases of distress.

– Neutrality

In order to continue to enjoy the confidence of all, the Movement may not take sides in hostilities or
engage at any time in controversies of a political, racial, religious or ideological nature.

– Independence

The Movement is independent. The National Societies, while auxiliaries in the humanitarian services
of their governments and subject to the laws of their respective countries, must always maintain
their autonomy so that they may be able at all times to act in accordance with the principles of the
Movement.

– Voluntary service

It is a voluntary relief movement not prompted in any manner by desire for gain.

– Unity

There can be only one Red Cross or one Red Crescent Society in any one country. It must be open
to all. It must carry on its humanitarian work throughout its territory.

– Universality

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, in which all Societies have equal status
and share equal responsibilities and duties in helping each other, is worldwide.
