ASHGABAT, TURKMENISTAN — During July 21-22, 2026, a training seminar was held for personnel of military units in the city of Ashgabat, in accordance with the 2026 Joint Training Events Plan for the Dissemination of International Humanitarian Law, developed by the Red Crescent Society of Turkmenistan and the Ministry of Defense of Turkmenistan. More than 500 military personnel took part in the event. The seminar organized within the framework of the NRCST project "Support for the Auxiliary Role of the National Society in Humanitarian Action."

During the session, the historical origins of humanism, the legacy of Henry Dunant, founder of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, as well as the 7 Fundamental Principles of the Movement — Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity, and Universality — were discussed in detail.

Furthermore, based on the 1949 Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols, participants were briefed on international restrictions in the conduct of military operations and the legal norms protecting civilians, prisoners of war, the wounded, and the sick. The seminar also highlighted the provisions of national legislation and the auxiliary role of the National Society to public authorities in the humanitarian field.

One of the most active parts of the session was a lively Q&A segment, during which military personnel asked questions regarding restrictions under practical conflict conditions and the protective power of the Red Crescent emblem, receiving comprehensive answers.

The National Red Crescent Society of Turkmenistan will continue its regular work to disseminate knowledge of International Humanitarian Law and reinforce humanitarian values in society in cooperation with relevant departments and the country's military personnel.
