95 years have passed since the founding of the National Red Crescent Society of Turkmenistan. During this period, the Society achieved significant transformations and successes in its development.
Starting its activity in 1926, the National Red Crescent Society currently has 5 velayat, 6 city and 40 etrap departments and three (3) subordinate enterprises. The main real support of the Society is its members, which currently number over 226,000 people. More than 3,000 trained volunteers are active participants in the activities of the NRCST.
Carrying out its statutory activities, the National Red Crescent Society of Turkmenistan in recent years has improved the work in the field of cooperation with state, public and international organizations. An example of this is the close cooperation of the Society with the Ministries of Health and Medical Industry, Education, Internal Affairs and Sports and Youth Policy of Turkmenistan in the field of disease prevention and promotion of a healthy lifestyle.
In recent years, when carrying out activities among young people aimed at preventing infectious and non-infectious diseases, teaching the basics of International Humanitarian Law and the rules of behavior during emergency situations, the National Society pays special attention to improving the quality of work performed.
The provision of humanitarian assistance is now being carried out in a more targeted manner, the needs of each applicant are analyzed in detail and taken into account. Patrons within the country are actively involved in the provision of humanitarian assistance.
In addition to providing social assistance, the NRCST carries out activities to reduce the vulnerability of recipients by developing their capabilities:
- With the financial support of the Japanese Embassy in Turkmenistan, two boarding schools for children with disabilities (in Turkmenabat and Turkmenbashi) built and commissioned greenhouses designed to develop students' knowledge in agriculture.
- In the cities of Ashgabat and Turkmenabat, sewing workshops operate at the NRCST with a training course in sewing. The courses can be attended by people from vulnerable groups of the population free of charge.
The National Society of the Red Crescent of Turkmenistan, fulfilling its high humanitarian mission, carries out activities aimed at preparing and responding to emergency situations. In this direction, activities are being carried out to educate the population on the rules of behavior in emergency situations. The National Society, being a member of the State Commission for Emergency Situations, is currently building the capacity of the Society. In the warehouses of the National Society located in Ashgabat and in the velayats, stocks in case of emergencies are fully completed. The composition and training of the national disaster response team in the central office and in the velayats was renewed.
Active work is underway to establish international cooperation. Over the past few years, the NRCST has acted as the host of the National Society for several international and regional meetings and forums within the framework of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. We are proud that it was in Ashgabat that many important decisions were made, which later were key in the development of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
The National Red Crescent Society of Turkmenistan, performing a supporting role for the state in humanitarian activities, is guided by the initiatives of the leader of the nation, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov aimed at the benefit of the people. The path of development of our state is the path of development and transformation of humanitarian activities of the National Red Crescent Society of Turkmenistan.
